This is a good picture Mike..drawn from the vantage point of Strout...I think of this moment being one time in the story when Matt could have pulled out of what he is doing but doesn't (he wants him to be quiet, otherwise it humanizes Strout too much in Matt's mind). If you see the film, "In the Bedroom" (based on this story), it looks a bit like this scene.
